[Solved] "Authentication servers are down. Please try again later"....Help? - Server Support and Administration - Support - Minecraft Forum (2024)

Okay, I know this has been asked about a lot here, and I'm sorry for another duplicate, but I have not been able to find any fix to this issue what so ever.

Now that that's out of the way,

Every time I try to join my own server(Hosted on my own network by an old HP 1U rack mount I had laying around) I get the error listed in the thread title. I can connect to minecraft.net perfectly fine from my personal computer AND the server(Via ping <domain> and web browser). Ping shows no dropped packets, pings are around 35 MS average, with no crazy spikes or anything like that. I've tried connecting to the internal and external IP of the server, yet both yield the same authentication error result. There's no firewall on the server as far as I can tell, and ports are forwarded(Heck I even DMZ'd the server and my PC for a short amount of time to test, and as usual I same old auth error). The server is running Lubuntu 15.10 64-bit, with Java Runtime Environment 8 downloaded from the Lubuntu software centre.

I'm extremely stumped at this point. I really have no clue what on earth could be wrong. My Insurgency dedicated servers take connections perfectly fine, and the MC authentication servers are most certainly not down(I'm connected to Snapcraft.net as I type this + this issue has been going on for about a week).

A bit of extra details:

Every time I try to connect and get disconnected because of the auth error, it shows me connecting on a different port(Server's "latest.log" below).

The server worked fine on a 32-bit version of the OS. I recently updated to a 64-bit version because I needed to run some applications that required 64-bit processing. I did a clean reinstall with a complete reformat of the hard drive, so no old files are left over. This error occurs on a brand new install of the Minecraft server as well as the backup I had kept from the previous install.

This happens on any computer I try to connect with, be it Linux or Windows, as well as with friends that are not situated in my LAN.

Thanks for taking the time to read over my post, I hope it wasn't too long and dragged out(I tried to include anything that might be helpful, so I am sorry for the extremely long page...). If anyone could lend me a hand with this, I would really appreciate it.

In the logs, it looks like the times are correct, but check this anyway...

Make sure that your PC's time is set correctly (yes, the actual time clock)

Make sure that the server's hardware and sysclock are correct

Otherwise, I'm not sure right now.

Are they set to the correct time zone?

I had the same issue on my own server, and while they were the correct time, the zone was off.

Otherwise, make sure that nothing related to "amzonaws" service is blocked (be it AV, firewall (although you did say it doesn't have one), etc). That's where Mojang's auth servers are hosted.

The time zone is showing UTC -5:00 Eastern Time(which is correct)

As for the blocked services, there's nothing related to amzonaws in the IP tables, in fact I have the iptables set to allow absolutely EVERYTHING at the moment, and it still gives me the authentication error. Theres no antivirus installed on the server, and all other firewalls are disabled. I'm really confused now, seeing as how this setup worked perfectly just last week on a 32-bit version of Lubuntu 15.10. It was on the same router, same hardware, and pretty much all the same settings. What possibly could have changed during the reinstall? I didn't need to change the firewall settings or mess with the IP tables before...

Edit: I'm going to do some testing. Since this happened on another identical server I had, I'm going to see if the same issue happens on a 64-bit server distro of Ubuntu. I'm not that great with the command line, but I should be able to get an SSH and Minecraft server working.
